Draft: CHL Import Draft CGY (2021) Round 1 #35

Maxim Muranov joined the Calgary Hitmen organization after being drafted in the 2021 CHL Import draft in the first round (35th overall). Muranov arrived in Canada in October 2021 to compete for the two import roster spots over the duration of two weeks. Muranov went on to make the roster, becoming a staple in the lineup playing 50 games. The 2004-born forward from Moscow, Russia finished the season with 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists) in 50 games in his rookie season.

“This was my first year in the WHL and I was just happy to be playing for the Calgary Hitmen and to be in Canada” said Maxim. “I’m already looking forward to next season and hope to produce more and continue to enjoy the game.”

A smooth skater with an accurate shot, Muranov was able to showcase these strengths throughout the season. “Max really began to get comfortable with the North-American game as the season progressed.” said Hitmen Head Coach Steve Hamilton. “It’s very evident that he has tons of natural ability.”

And this natural ability did not go unnoticed.  With the imports large size and aggressive play his talents were recognized by scouts and was listed in both the midterm and final rankings for NHL Central Scouting and currently sits at number 197 amongst North American Skaters heading into Thursday’s draft. “As a scout, it’s all about projection and with Max you can definitely imagine his trajectory being that of a future professional.” continued Hamilton “He is filling out his frame and I would expect him to have a significant impact on the WHL this year.”

The dream of the NHL becomes more of a reality for many this week and for Muranov it would take him one step closer “It has always been my dream to be in the NHL” Muranov continued. “If I am drafted this week I will be extremely happy.”

Muranov will be returning to the Calgary Hitmen for the 2022-23 season and is currently living and training in Calgary during the off season.

The 2022 NHL  Draft will take place on Thursday, July 7 and Friday July 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, QC.
