Hitmen And Siksika Health Services Partner To Present The ZOOLIGHTS Skating Rink

The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is honoured to partner with Siksika Health Services this holiday season to present the outdoor skating rink at Calgary Zoo’s ZOOLIGHTS.

Set under a raised canopy of coloured lights, access to the rink is FREE with a ticket to ZOOLIGHTS.  Don’t own skates?  Not to worry, as there will be complimentary rentals on site from KidSport Calgary.

The skating rink, located on the west lawn, will be co-branded between the Hitmen and Siksika Health Services and builds off their Every Child Matters Game.  The inaugural event, held last season during a Hitmen game at Scotiabank Saddledome, was dedicated to indigenous youth empowerment through sport while celebrating the Blackfoot culture.  Banners at the ZOOLIGHTS skating rink will celebrate the partnership including Blackfoot messaging.

“This is just another example of the partnership that the Calgary Hitmen and Siksika Health Services share, in this case to provide a safe, outdoor venue for families during these challenging times,” said Hitmen Assistant Manager of Business Operations Rob Kerr.  “A trip to ZOOLIGHTS is a tradition for many during the holidays and a wonderful opportunity to spend with family and friends.”

“We are honoured to partner with our friends, the Calgary Hitmen on the ZOOLIGHT Skating rink,” commented Siksika Nation Chief Ouray Crowfoot.  “It gives us the opportunity to reminisce on the message of the Every Child Matters Game, as well provide a space for our Blackfoot language to be displayed for all of Mohkinstsis.”

“The Calgary Zoo is excited to have the Calgary Hitmen and Siksika Health Services sponsor the ice rink for ZOOLIGHTS,” added Steven Ross, Chief Development Officer, Calgary Zoo.  “We are very proud of this partnership, and to showcase the Calgary Hitmen’s community commitment at the ice rink – a favorite attraction amongst our guests. This year will see the rink open to the public under COVID safety protocols that will ensure a safe experience for all guests. We look forward to welcoming all skaters to ZOOLIGHTS again this year”.

The skating rink COVID-19 safety measures comprise of the following:

  • Masks are required on the rink;
  • While skating, one way counter-clockwise flow will be maintained and communicated by rink volunteers, stanchions and on-ice signage;
  • Skaters will be asked to maintain physical distance while putting on equipment and on-ice;
  • The boards and rink entry will be sanitized frequently.

These protocols will be enforced by Calgary Zoo volunteers who will be on site every night.

ZOOLIGHTS, Calgary’s award winning magical holiday tradition, begins tonight and will be glowing for six consecutive weeks with the exception of Christmas Day until January 3rd, 2021.

Timed tickets must be purchased in advance of attending ZOOLIGHTS at CalgaryZoo.com/zoolights.  Tickets will not be available for purchase onsite.  First entry at the Calgary Zoo is from 5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.; last entry from 8:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Entries are staggered in 30 minute intervals to ensure safe physical distancing throughout the ZOOLIGHTS experience.
